St. Paul’s Hospital is considered the Centre of Excellence for Cardiac Sciences in British Columbia. This means that the more challenging cardiac patients are transferred to our facility for further management. The Cardiac Surgery ICU is a 10 bed unit which admits post-operative open heart surgery (OHS) patients, including those receiving heart transplants.
The respiratory therapist, providing 24 hour coverage in the CSICU, initiates mechanical ventilation, weans and extubates all post-operative OHS patients using departmental protocols. Respiratory therapists have also been placed in the operating room under the Division of Anaesthesia and the Department of Nursing. Ventilators currently used in CSICU include the PB840 & Avea
